"Bought new TV, received broken and probably used TV" 2009-12-07
By Amazon Customer
I ordered the Panasonic TC-L37X1 as a new TV sold from Amazon. It was shipped by a freight carrier (instead of UPS or FedEx) with free shipping and the box had a hole in it when the TV arrived. When I turned the TV on, the screen looked the same as a car window after a big rock has hit it. The TV was obviously damaged before or during shipping. Additionally, on the top third of the screen (which wasn't as damaged) you could still read TV channel and menu item listings and all the listings were in Spanish. That, along with pretty limited and broken styro packaging in the box, indicates to me that the TV was previously owned & used since the language selection was already done. I probably won't order a TV from Amazon again. These are two big issues to have in a single purchase and it's not worth the hassle to me.

 "sound quality important" 2009-10-09
By pmconsumer
Picture quality is frequently a function of the source signal and the source associated with this TV is far from great, but at that, the picture is quite acceptible.

The main feature that impresses me in this unit is the sound quality. I am quite pleased with its clarity. I have a Samsung which I most often augment with earphones or external speakers. With the sound quality of the Panasonic I have not felt it necessary to use either.

"I'm pleased with some caveats (perhaps user error?)" 2009-11-24
By Cordog (santa clara, ca)
I *think* this set is a great value, but I may be doing something wrong with the settings which is why I'm not giving 5 stars for the picture.

Some background. I read the Amazon reviews which were stellar overall, and read the CNET review. I read the Plasma TV Mag review after I bought the plasma, and it may reflect some of the issues I'm having.

And the value - WOW - I got the set at Best Buy for $769 - they wanted to beat the Amazon price at the time.

Let me confirm a few things mentioned previously in these reviews:

1. It does take a few days to "break in" the picture. The picture has gotten better over the two weeks I've owned it.

2. The frame is extra-glossy and doesn't help the already-reflective surface of the plasma

3. The picture controls are very limited and not nearly as numerous as what you would find on a Sony or other set

The biggest picture quality issue I'm having with this set is jaggeed edges with higher sharpness settings and very dull and poorly defined faces with lower sharpness settings. You really have to play with the settings quite a bit. Overall, closeups on people and other imagery is exceptional, but objects in the background are very fuzzy, washed out and dull, almost colorless in some situations, for example crowds at a football games appear blurry and dull. I found by increasing contrast and reducing brightness, I could help this a bit. The Plasma Mag review confirms this problem. I would say this is the biggest difference versus an LCD, visuals do not have nearly the sharp edges or color depth. Sure, the blacks are much better, but I would love to have better color depth.

For example, if you're watching ESPN NFL show or something, the faces of the commentators at a distance are extremely fuzzy and poorly defined. But up front, incredible. LCDs are better at this I think.

Here are my settings, so maybe somebody can help:

Picture Mode - Custom

Contrast - 77

Brightness - 57

Color - 44

Tint + 4 (reds are too red)

Sharpness - 48

Black level - Light

Overall great set but I'm constantly playing with the picture settings for different types of shows, which I don't like.

And you can't really expect perfection at this price!

I think this is great TV for the price. If you are looking for a good looking Big tv for a space where you wont be within 5 feet of it, its great. I have really no complaints for this tv, except that it only has an optical audio out. It works great for playing video games, I have an xbox 360 and PS2, and games look awesome. Highly Recommend this tv.

This TV is all it was advertised to be. Awesome picture, easy to use and inexpensive. The sound is not good but I will resolve that soon with a Panasonic Home Theater system. Crisp and Clean, this is the perfect TV for the entry level HDTV buyer. Don't pass it up.

"Best Value for the MONEY!!!!" 2009-10-25
By Jesse San Nicolas (Fayetteville, NC United States)
I was renting this TV thru a rent-a-type place paying $140 a month before I purchased this thru amazon. Let me tell you this TV is the best deal since EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did order thru amazon paid $789 and when it arrived the screen was CRACKEd. I was so mad. I waited a week for this TV to arrive and it came broke. I called up amazon and the lady told me they would rush ship me another one. I asked how long should it take, and she said about a week. I told here what kind of rush shipping is that, as I waited a week for the first one to arrive. She then said she could do nothing. Could not even credit me something for this inconvenience. Horrible customer serveice on this AMAZON deal. If I knew it would take 2 weeks to arrive I would have gone to WOLLY WORLD!!!

 "Value + Quality + Reputation" 2009-11-13
By B. Hughes (Tampa, Florida USA)
I've had this for just about a month and could not be happier. The perfect size for my room, we sit about 9 - 12 ft from it. The room is never well lit so plasma is the way to go for natural color. Excellent picture quality and the sound quality is quite acceptable. Of course it is better when you add the surround sound. No analog audio out, so what, go digital. You cannot go wrong with the X1 (42 or 50).

And, you can't go wrong if you buy it from Amazon!

This product, our second large screen of this brand, arrived via FedEx in perfect condition, amazing, since the other set arrived via private contractor with TWO deliveryman, and the FedEx guy struggled to unload. He also would not let me examine it on the spot, which, if damaged, I would have had the opportunity to reject it. The set works just dandy, although we do not have HD on this one, and the other we received with same pix is not as good as seen in stores. All in all, very happy, and in this world of rapidly deflating prices, it, after about 60 days, remains a good price/value.

 "Good TV/Great Price" 2009-11-06
By RonBo (New Jersey)
For $600 -- no tax and no shipping charges -- this is a great entry-level HD TV. I had a sony 27" tube TV for 9 years and wanted to get into HD without spending too much because the tech changes so quickly. Once I get used to all the particulars of HD watching, in a couple years I'll take more of a risk with something cutting edge. Probably the only change would've been to jump up to 1080, to really take advantage of HD, but that would have been another $200.

This Panasonic 42" is a good, solid buy, so don't get too bogged down in research like I did. The picture, sound and use are all very good. If this is your first HD TV, you won't be blown away, but you'll be pleasantly satisfied, which is a great place to start. Also, the white glove shipping service that Amazon gave for free was great.

 "Great TV /value" 2009-11-01
By T. Teater
I bought this TV as a second TV. Its a little big for the use but at the price, it was too good to pass up. It is a 720 not 1080 but at 42" and our viewing distance I can't really tell the difference. Our viewing is mostly all HD/satellite and we are very happy with this TV. The only negative, and its a nit-pick is that the stand does not swivel, but we have ours a separate swivel that also holds the satellite box. A great choice for saving some money if, like me, you can't stand the motion blur of LCDs.

 "Excellent TV" 2009-11-13
By KMM (Texas)
The price was certainly right. Panasonic is noted for its quality and this one is no exception. Very nice picture and I love that it seems like a large screen, but fits nicely on a smaller table we use.

I feel it is user-friendly in every way. Quite easy to operate and navigate.

Side view is the only lower-than-average score it gets from me, but that is the nature of LCD TV's anyway.

 "This Tv Sucks" 2009-10-30
By Bruno Evan D'costa (NC)

I will never again buy tv without looking at the picture quality first. Jeeezz the picture quality of this tv is just awful. I first used the composite cable and it looked blurry and then I thought I should buy HDMI it will probably bring the picture more like CRT TV. Guess what nothing changed it all the same blurry picture. Another problem is that POWER BUTTON on TV is not working for some reason but the remote works perfectly.

If any of you have any suggestion for me please feel free to say it. It looks like I am not buy another tv unless it has the same crystal clear quality as the CRT tv has.

By tv fan (long island ny)
I purchased this tv for the bedroom-incredible HD picture-far superior to the much more expensive Sharp Aquos 32 inch that is in the living room. Even my ten year old daughter commented on that fact! However, standard def is fair to middling-but,except for a local cable news station (that is ironically not in HD) everything we watch is HD programming. The sound is ok, we are not hooked up to speakers or home theatre. Perhaps that would improve things somewhat. Excellent service from Amazon-I'm overall very happy with the set!

I was skeptical about buying this brand of television since I had a Sony and reviews for Samsung were so good. But I'm glad I did because this is a wonder tv. The sound is more than I expected for the speakers to be in the back. The picture actually look better than my Sony! And the bonus is being able to use my Ipod Touch with it. I'm glad I made the purchase!

I love this TV so much I may buy a second for another room. It has amazing HD picture, so much so that you feel like you can reach in and touch what is on screen. The colors are beautiful and the iPod functionality is great!

I agree that the sleep timer could be easier and I wish the buttons on the remote were backlit but I will get over it for the great picture.

 "Fantastic Purchase" 2009-11-02

By Merissa Fulchino (East Bum Nowhere)

I bought this TV for my college dorm room and it meets every requirment I had. The price is reasonable and you'll get a great quality TV worth every penny. I currently use mine as monitor to my Macbook (the picture quality is amazing.) I have an RCA home theater system plugged into it so I'm not a reliable source on the TV's sound. However, I can vouge for ease of use (which is remarkably easy) and great picture quality. This TV was everything I had hoped for, and even more! The iPod dock comes in handy when I have friends over - it is a great addon to the TV and the program is very easy to use. I highly recommend this TV to anyone and everyone! If you have any questions regarding the TV feel free to ask me as I would be glad to help. Good luck in your shopping and I hope you choose this Panasonic!

For the money this is an excellent tv. Theres a little bit of motion blur which is why i didn't give it 5 stars, but i knew there would be so i'm not too dissappointed. Its just a bedroom tv and like i said it excels at that for the price.

 "Nice for the price" 2009-10-26

By E. Nettles (St. George, SC)

I only bought this because of the low price offer I received from 6ave Electronics. This is a 32-inch LCD which I got for less than $400 including shipping. I decided to use this to replace the 20-inch LCD in my bedroom and I have to say, the new standard for bedrooms needs to be 32-inch models. I have no problems with the color and I did little to no extra tweaking. I just set it to cinema mode and it's great for me. And since it's a Panasonic, it has the viera easy link connection which I love. If I want to watch a blu-ray dvd in my Panasonic Blu-Ray player, I just insert the disc and press play, the TV tunes to the proper input for DVD viewing. It also includes an iPod dock, which plugs into the back of the TV and you can use your TV remote to operate the iPod. This is a really nice TV with lots of inputs.

"No headphone jack and poor speakers" 2009-10-04

By S. Porterfield (St. Louis, MO)

Silly me - I assumed all of these new flat screen tvs came with headphone jacks, or at least audio out jacks. Not this one! I'm hard of hearing and need either VERY loud sound or headphones to watch television. This model comes only with a digital audio out jack - no other audio out jacks. So I watched tv last night with the sound set at 80 and still had trouble hearing clearly. I was so pleased that I got a great price for this set, but the price really is that it's too expensive to return it and get one I can use with headphones. My only other option, as far as I can see from searching the internet, is to purchase a stereo receiver with a digital audio in jack and a headphone jack, likely adding a minimum of $100 to the purchase price of this set to make it usable for me. Why, why, WHY would Panasonic make a television without a headphone jack or at least component audio out jacks in this day and age? And why didn't I pay attention to the jacks it has (far fewer than on the smaller Samsung lcd tv we already own)? I realize this is my fault, but why did the company have to skimp on jacks?
