"Ashamed to say it's the best thing I've ever purchased." 2009-09-11
By James Myhre
I bought this TV last spring and paid $1600, something I'd said I'd never do. Brought it home and set it up and was a little stunned to find out that I needed to upgrade my DirectTV receiver to HD. After all was said and done, it truly is the best thing I've ever purchased. I talked to 2 different salesmen from 2 different major dept. store chains when I was looking. I was set on the LCD from what I had heard. After the "spiel", I asked both salesmen what they owned and they both said "plasma". They explained some stuff about the rate of speed that is captured with the plasma and that they both notice the LCD streaking at times of high action in sporting events. They also did warn me about reflection issues with the plasma and they were right. I have a window at the back of the room on the south side of the house and when the sun shines in, I have to shut the curtains. If I look close (really, really close), I can see the lights in the room reflect off the glass like screen, but the outstanding picture and contrast make it a non-issue for me. I used to occasionally check in to catch the scores of the MN Twins games with my 34 inch Toshiba, now I look forward to coming home and watching the entire games. I'm still paying off the credit card, but haven't sent in a payment yet that hasn't brought satisfaction to mind. I'm salivating waiting for Football season! It's really a great TV....

This plasma tv looks awesome mounted on the wall in my gaming/ chilling area! Xbox 360 looks perfect on it and i sometimes hook my overclocked beast of a PC to it (via DVI-HDMI or HDMI-HDMI cable) and max out the eye candy, and let me tell you...ITS UNREAL! Of course HDTV looks great on it...ok..Everything looks great on it! Make sure you get a surround sound audio system to use with this.

Excellent performing plasma. Has nice hook up and card slots. The built in speakers will get you buy until you get a surround system.

We watch fast actions sports/movies and this plasma does a great job following the action without shadows or pixelization. This made it an easy choice over any LCD.

I was watching TV when the power just shut off, and now it won't turn back on. The TV is about 2 years old, so it isn't covered by warranty. After doing some research online it appears I'm not the only one with this problem.

 "TH50PZ700U" 2009-11-26
By Tracy T. Stout (illinois)
Yes, I know this is supposed to be for 800U's and mines a 700U but the point is that they are basically the same and i need to vent. I referenced consumer reports and at the time the 700U was the cream of the crop. I will agree, it is a very nice unit. the sound produced from the tv speakers are very impressive. (surround system hadnt been hooked up yet). its all for not as this TV was purchased 2 years ago and now its gone black. so yes, this tv is a great tv....its RELIABILITY on the other hand is NOT!!!!! you know, you get these reviews and such, when they are new tv's, they're ALL nice tv's but i guess when it comes down to it, its about reliability as well. i have had CRT tv's last for over 20 years. this is pathetic. a $2300 unit only lasts 2 years. i have since read reviews with similar problems with these panasonics. the repair guy told me that there was a class action suit and that panasonic has extended the warranties on 42" plasmas. any lawyers out there want to see what we can do for the 50"ers. picture and function great.......while it lasts.

I did a lot of research, and decided to go with this TV. I haven't been sorry! The picture is so clear - it's absolutely amazing watching sports. And it makes me feel good that a year after my purchase, I have yet to see someone else with a better picture! I ordered from amazon, and am so happy with the price and service. Thank you!

I've owned this panel for over a year now and I couldn't be happier although I have one minor peeve. I just purchased my first blu-ray player and there is no way to label an input blu-ray. Also I'd like to add I've played several discs at 1080p/24 and found none of the flickering problems mentioned by other reviewers. (Oppo BDP-83). If I get the 100,000 hrs quoted for the half life I'll be one happy camper.

"Was a great TV, but only lived for 14 months" 2009-09-12
By Christopher J. Shaker (Bend, OR United States)
If I had rated this TV a few days ago, it would have gotten five stars. However, it just died the other night while my wife and I were watching TV on it. It made a 'pop', and the picture went away.

I tried disconnecting the power, and turning it back on. It blinks the red LED ten times, waits, then repeats. Looks like an error code to me.

It was a great TV before it died. It died about two months after the one year warranty ran out.

Chris Shaker

Update 2009-10-27: Got a call from Panasonic today, and they are going to cover the full cost of replacing the plasma display. Turns out the plasma display had a two year warrantee, even though the TV itself only had a one year warrantee. Thank you Panasonic!

We got the TV in January. I just now tore myself away from it long enough to review it.

We bought a Disney (blu-ray) movie with a travelogue feature of the grand canyon included - loking at the feature, on the TV was like looking through a window. - even standing way too close to the screen.

 "95% approval on the 58" Panasonic" 2009-05-24
By James H. Sutton Jr. (Tampa, FL)
I purchased the Panasonic 58" Viera a few weeks ago. It is an amazing tv with a great picture. We still haven't hooked up the Viera on-line services yet (mainly because it requires a ethernet connetion instead of the USB wireless connection that I purchased for it). The only negative things that I would say is (1) it is more reflective than it should be, (2) the stand sticks out a good 8 in front of the TV, and (3) the internet connection should be available via ethernet or USB 2.0 connections (the lack of a USB limits hooking up a lot of things). Otherwise, it is an amazing TV.

"Great TV but status of Amazon VOD on Viera Cast is Unknown" 2009-04-12
By H. Chan (Morgan Hill, CA United States)
I've owned this TV for a little less than 2 weeks. Overall i'm very pleased with my purchase. Installation and setup was easy. I'm using this TV with a Dish Network HD DVR receiver. I've also connected an ethernet connection and a standard definition DVD player. Picture quality is excellent. I'm using the "Vivid" setting, but sometimes use the "Standard" setting for casual viewing to save energy, etc. (not sure how much it really saves though ...). Prior to purchase i was considering this model and the 58PZ800U. I elected to purchase this model because of its Viera Cast capability (i.e., the ethernet IPTV connection). The only disappointment so far is that Viera Cast on this TV does not contain Amazon Video on Demand. I've checked various websites and called Panasonic support and it's not certain whether Amazon VOD will be implemented on this TV via a software update. If that is true, I would recommend to other buyers who are considering this model versus the 800U to go with the latter and if they are interested in the Viera Cast capability, to simply purchase a Panasonic Blu Ray player with Viera Cast.

 "Beyond my expectations" 2009-03-16
By Seans Pen (Brooklyn, New York)
So much has already been said about this amazing Plasma so I won't waste words here. After months of research this loyal Sony owner jumped ship. After side by side comparisons and reading countless reviews I determined that the Viera blew the Sony XBR away. The Kuros by Pioneer has priced itself out of the competition for my wallet and to be honest I think you are splitting hairs between the Viera and the Kuros. My dilemna was in choosing between the 58 Inch Viera 800 or the flagship 850U. The lesser priced 800 is the only model of the two that gets the THX certification on it's picture and is priced around $500.00 less. The 850U has the firmware and ethernet connection so that it's capabilities are upgradeable. It currrently has the ability to view your Picasa photo's,watch YouTube videos, and a few other neat things like the one click concierge service for any problems the TV should have as well as world weather. The Vera Link option works seamlessly with my Panasonic 55 Blu-Ray player. I was able to have the best of both worlds. Although Abes of Maine consistantly had the 800 at he best price around. I was able to buy a refurbished 850U that comes with the 90 day warranty from Panasonic.I paid $2399.00 and I am so happy I did. This TV is in perfect condition and they pack it like it's the last one on earth. I bought from Just like New Electronics in case you are looking. I'm amazed at this Picture and all the bells ans whistles the TV has. It's has th whole family under it's hypnotic spell.I wanted the cleanest look I could get and replaced my old surround sound system with a Yamaha YSP4000 sound bar. I have no regrets on any of it.By buying the 850U I'm able to stay up to date with all the new ways Panasonic can think of to keep me connected to the world. I love the fact that it has begun to replace my small PC screen and Laptop with 58 inches of mind blowing views. If you can swing it I would not hesitate to buy the 850U. I don't think the lack of THX certification means anything other than Panasonic not wanting to pay the extra money for the Certification in an effort to keep it way under the Kuros.

All,

This is a great tv and I am not going to spend time on different aspects of this tv. Go to [.....] and read full review. However,I would like to report one thing as all buyers who buy Panasonic 850 series with Viera cast feature would need. I do not have Ethernet connection close to where I have installed tv. I have bought Apple Airport Express and configured it with home wireless network successfully. I am sure there are other solutions but this is something I can say with confidence that it works!  "great bang for the buck!" 2009-11-30
By J. Cordero
This is a beautiful piece of equipment. It matched and surpassed our family's viewing needs. The image is crisp and clear. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the glossy screen. 50" of glossy screen is very reflective. You really need a darkened room to enjoy the set and then it blows you away. Audio quality is improved through a DVD player's features because the TV's audio features are scant. There are plenty of inputs to connect all your peripherals. I just bought it, let's see how it is a year from now when the warranty runs out.

 "Very good plasma set." 2010-01-08
By S. Hupp (USA)
Pretty much, this TV rocks.

They have some at a local store and I'm bewildered people walk by them at their price point and buy a more expensive, inferior TV set.

It looks good with any source. SD, HD, it does great. Of course things are not going to look as good with SD content, but you've got a 46" screen where you wouldn't be able to see the gritty details as well as on an old 27" SDTV set - it's technology, not magic.

Do yourself a favor and get your TV calibrated. We picked up a copy of Elf on DVD and used its picture calibration setup, the picture went from great to even greater. It was impressive. I didn't think it could had got any better.

Video games, this thing is like an arcade monitor on steroids. They don't have monitors as good as this thing in arcades.

Even playing super fast games everything looks buttery smooth. Even old 16bit video games look good on this monitor.

Over the air HDTV looks great, especially a local 1080i channel (PBS HD). It looks like a computer screen using DVI input instead of a TV screen, that's how good it looks.

My complaint? I DO have a complaint. The TV signal meter will not stay up longer than 2 minutes, and when I'm outside adjusting an antenna looking through the window in the cold and it vanishes, that sucks.

But that's about it. Family has a 2 year old Vizio plasma that has noticable ghosting, otherwise called burn in (but fades, so, ghosting).

This television has not even had a hint of ghosting even from the word go. I'm completely comfortable playing video games with it, for hours. Not a single problem.

Plasma? Panasonic? Win.

"Was a good price but not a great picture" 2009-12-05
By D. Robertson (Pendleton, OR United States)
This is my second Panasonic plasma screen. My first Panasonic, now about two years old, is a great 42 inch set and has a great picture. I used it for my satellite tv, computer and running blu-rays from my PS3. I thought I couldn't got wrong with Panasonic after the success of the first, but I am disappointed with the 46 inch U1. It was an incredible price at another retailer ($788 and I've heard of some getting it for $698) and I noted the 5 star reviews here, but after having it a few weeks, wish I had spent more on something else. The picture controls have very limited effect, and frankly the image is very dark. Some movies and TV shows..especially those shot at night have such a dark image that you can't see any detail. This TV is very energy efficient as compared to their other models, and uses half the energy that my 42 inch did, and maybe that is where the image sacrifice is. That said, it is 46 inches, and Panasonic has one of the best durability track records out there. So, good bang for the buck perhaps, but I would buy another TV if I had it to do over again.

 "Panasonic Plasma is awesome!" 2009-11-22
By T. Walker
My Samsung 50 inch DLP finally gave up the ghost, and don't get me started on how many times the repairman had to come out and put parts in the darn thing, and how long it sat waiting on those parts, and oh yes the bulbs that would just go out for no reason. But I digress, on to the Panasonic. I got a deal at $695.00 from another dealer and what a breeze to set up with my home theater system and harmony remote. I did not even look at the owners manual until I was watching tv. I did not know how sharp and clear my dish network HD channels were until I got this TV, it is so user friendly. I did go from a 50 inch to a 46 but the quality of the picture more than makes up for the loss in size. At the time I bought the DLP in 2004 a Plasma this size cost around $5000 and the quality was no where near this good. Again I say this is a great TV.

This TV is so sweet. I have looked for over a year for the perfect TV. Either they were to much, to blurry, not dark enough, not big enough, or you never herd of the brand. AND NOW I got my Panasonic 46" TC-P46U1 for $788. It runs at 600Hz are you kidding the motion scene are crystal clear. YOU DO HAVE TO HAVE AN HD SIGNAL FOR IT TO BE CLEAR! To many people get angry when they hook up their regular TV signal at 420P and want it to be clear? So if you have an HD receiver from a dish company or a blue ray player, your good to go with this TV. Owe yeah YOU HAVE TO USE AN HDMI CABLE!

 "Excellent value" 2009-11-10
By DM (San Mateo, CA)
I have had this tv for close to a year now. I purchased it with amazon's white glove delivery included. The delivery company called to schedule a time, and they actually came out on a Sunday to accommodate my work schedule. The tv is beautiful and has great resolution. The customer service is outstanding. I was a bit challenged hooking up older models of DVD player and VCR and the customer service guy patiently talked me through the connection. There is a very easy to use function to switch to dvd or vcr play. Set up is easy. The only problem I've had (and it's probably that I don't have the connection quite right) is that I have to turn up the volume from the normal 15-20 to 45-55 for dvd play. I am very happy with this tv and highly recommend it.

"Months of Research Resulted in a Great TV" 2009-04-24
By Mail Debaser
Not always the first one to jump on the bandwagon, I was definitely leery about spending a bundle of cash on an HD set when my tube TV seemed just fine. This is, of course, until Amazon and other retailers had this baby available earlier this year at a fantastic...unbeatable, really, price.

Now, I warmed to the idea, but again, I need to know what exactly I'm doing with my hard earned cash. I spent countless hours not only deciding the LCD -vs- Plasma -vs- DLP debate (I settled on plasma), but which brand/size/etc I definitely wanted to stick with until the next "latest and greatest" technology craze bites.

I concluded the Panasonic 42" TH-42PX80U was the way to go. Not only do multiple professional reviews give Panasonic props for displaying the truest blacks, but they also produce a plasma which should have the capacity to run approximately 8 hours a day for the next 20 years. For the price compared ot LCD, at the time, it was a no-brainer for me.

So, while I'm not much for opening new credit cards, I did accept Amazons offer to create a credit line for no interest over a period of six months. To sweeten the deal, I also received Amazon's 'White Glove Delivery' service. A1 absolutely fantastic.

Four months with the new TV, and I'm smitten. It looks great and connected nicely with my Denon AV surround receiver. Blue Ray's look great, as do the new episodes of Lost, and as I'm sure it will when the Cubs win the series this year ;-). Can't believe it took me so long to come around and I have absolutely ZERO regrets trusting Panasonic with my television needs.

I should say, I do not use the TV's audio. this is NOT because the sound is poor; its actually outstanding. I just prefer to put my full audio system to use.

I purchased this product about a year ago. It was easy to set up (the most difficult part was attaching the base to the TV).

I have a Playstation 3 and an Apple TV and everything looks great on this TV.

I've had friends over who own Samsung LCD's and they love the picture of the screen, the black contrast is amazing (I would go online to get the best color settings).

Why go to the movies anymore.
